Shenandoah “Hey Mister (I Need This Job) Single Of The Day
Greetings from Asheville, where good music is always on the turntable. Today’s Single Of The Day is a 1992 release from one of the decade’s most recognizable groups, Shenandoah. The group had just left Columbia, the previous year, where they had enjoyed 10 top 10 hits, with 4 number ones. After joining the RCA roster, they would immediately score with “Rock My Baby”, which just missed the top spot in the Summer of 1992. For their follow-up, “Hey Mister (I Need This Job)” was chosen. Debuting in September, the single would climb into the Country 40, but once there, began losing it’s momentum, and eventually peaked at twenty-eight. Looking back, I’m not really sure why it didn’t do better than it did. Perhaps it hit too close to home for many listeners, or maybe the tempo was just a little too slow, compared to much of what was on play lists, at that time. It’s a fine composition, and certainly the performance is great. Sometimes, it’s just not the right time for a record.
Saving vinyl, one record at a time.
