Glen Campbell “Another Fine Mess” Classic 45 The Very First Single Of The Day On Our Old Blog Is Back!

Glen Campbell "Another Fine Mess" 45 rpm

1978 chart single for Glen Campbell

Greetings from Asheville, where there’s always good music on the turntable. Today’s Classic 45 is making its second appearance as such; it was the first Classic 45, or as it was then known, Single of The Day on our old blog. A 1978 Glen Campbell release that was featured in a popular movie from that year, the black comedy, “The End”, starring Burt Reynolds, Dom DeLuise, Sally Field, and also featured the likes of Myrna Loy, Kristy McNichol, Robby Benson, Joanne Woodward, Carl Reiner, and Norman Fell.

You may remember the story, Reynolds plays a man who is terminally ill and wants to kill himself, winds up in a psychiatric ward where a fellow patient, played by DeLuise, offers to help him.  Of course, by the end of the film, Reynolds’ character has a change of heart.  As for the song, “Another Fine Mess” was written by prolific songwriter Paul Williams and would become Glen Campbell’s thirty-sixth top forty Country hit.

Released in late May, the single debuted in both Billboard and Cashbox in early June. Surprisingly, the single fell short of the top twenty on both charts. It peaked at twenty-one in Billboard, while stopping at twenty-three in Cashbox.

Despite its lack of success, chart-wise, it still is one of my favorite Glen Campbell songs. Has been since it’s release, which is hard to believe will be forty-one years ago, this Spring.

As always, your thoughts and opinions are welcome in the comment section below. Remember, we are saving vinyl and country music, one record at a time.
