She Listens To What???? Part 1 My 13 year old Daughter Never Ceases To Amaze Me With Her Musical Tastes

Greetings from Asheville, where good music is always on the turntable. I’ve decided to start a new category and I am calling it “She Listens To What?”. It’s about my 13 year old daughter’s musical tastes. I’m often surprised by what she enjoys listening to. Many students of her age are into the latest techno-pop; bro-country; and hip-hop sounds. Not my daughter. She’d rather listen to Queen, Tom T. Hall, The Four Lads, or the Bee Gees. Seriously.

I’m actually glad that she is into the older music, and with an ecclectic taste, as well. Still, I get surprised, sometimes, when I find out the songs she likes. Like tonight, driving home from her volleyball game, she has her IPod plugged into the car stereo, and starts listening to this song…

Yep, pianist Roger Williams and his 1956 instrumental hit, “Beyond The Sea”. One listen and it’s not hard to see why anyone would like this gold nugget. Beautiful sounds from a beautiful era of music.

Saving vinyl, one record at a time.

True enough, but be sure to introduce her to Bobby Darin’s vocal version of the song, and Charles Trenet’s original “La Mer” sung in French. The Trenet lyrics were not used (or even translated) for Darin’s version since Darin wanted a love song, and Trenet’s song was about the sea

Oh yeah, she actually first became familiar with the song, via Bobby Darin. She’s a Bobby Darin fan, thanks to me! LOL Loves “Beyond The Sea”, “Mack The Knife”, and “Artificial Flowers”.
