Thrift Store Finds, April 6, 2019 Quality Can Be Better Than Quantity

Greetings from Asheville, where the good music is always on the turntable. Sunshine and 70 degrees made for a great day of thrifting and yard sale searching, today. And I found some really thrift store finds.

Buck Owens albumsThings started, in the morning, where we went to a community yard sale in the Asheville neighborhood of Montford. It went well, finding three Buck Owens LP’s; Bridge Over Troubled Water, I’ve Got You on My Mind Again, and The Buck Owens Show – Big in Vegas. In addition, found the albums She Needs Someone to Hold Her When She Cries from Conway Twitty and Billy Walker’s When A Man Loves A Woman. Found four 45’s, as well. Jean Shepard “The Tip of My Fingers”, Del Reeves “But I Do”, Hank Snow’s remake of his 1959 hit “The Last Ride, and an unknown artist named Freddie King. The song is called “I’ll Stay (Because I Want You More)”.Billy Walker and Conway Twitty albumsSome 45's from the yard sale

One other interesting find at the community yard sale, several 1960’s-era Look magazines, and one Saturday Evening Post.

In the afternoon, we visited the Hospice Thrift Shop and our Habitat For Humanity Home Store. While not finding large amounts, what I did find were some awesome pickups. On the country music side, there was Susie Allanson’s Heart to Heart album. That album featured her hit cover of the Bee Gees’ “Words”, plus “Two Steps Forward and Three Steps Back”. Also, a 1963-ish Sons of The Pioneers release, Trail Dust.  On the pop side, found a copy of Dean Martin’s 1972 Dino release, and Buddy Clark’s Greatest Hits. Buddy was a popular 1940’s vocalist who was tragically killed at the peak Susie Allanson and The Sons Of The Pioneers albumsof his career in a plane crash in 1949. Buddy and The Pioneers came from Habitat, while Susie and Dino were Hospice finds.

Sometimes the best days aren’t due to quantity, but rather quality.

We’re saving vinyl, one day at a time.

Freddie King was not an unknown – he was a well known blues artist who had some R&B chart success. Freddie was 6’5″ tall and died at age 42 from acute pancreatitis.

There is a Record Show in Orlando every April and October where you can pick up some vinyl gems at a reasonable price (no more than $3). This time my focus was on bluegrass and I found two Dry Branch Fire squad albums, a Johnson Mountain Boys, a Ralph Stanley plus some other stuff. I also found a copy of the James Taylor album on Apple

As far as country albums are concerned I found a near-mint copy of Ernest Tubb & Loretta Lynn SINGIN’ AGAIN, Gene Watson MEMORIES TO BURN, Max Powell (he penned some of the later Webb Pierce hits), Johnny Duncan & June Sterns BACK TO BACK and The Wilburn Brothers IT LOOKS LIKE THE SUN’S GONNA SHINE

Nice! We have one or two, here, though I’ve yet to go to any of them. But I used to go regularly to the shows in Dayton, Ohio and Indianapolis, Indiana. It was a great way to build the collection!
