Ultimate Twang Christmas Single Of The Day; Skip Ewing “Christmas Carol” Was labeled the B side (with Steve Wariner as the A side), but became a country Christmas classic

One of the things I always looked forward to, both as a country music listener, and later, as a radio air personality was the Christmas music. And part of that included the anticipation of the new releases that came, each year. Sometimes, artists released whole albums, and often, those that didn’t, would release singles (to radio, at least). While many of those would fade after two or three years, a few would remain staples for many years, sometimes even decades. Today’s Single Of The Day is one that enjoyed several Christmas seasons of popularity.

Skip Ewing has been a prolific songwriter in country music, over the past 30 plus years. And during the late 80’s and early 90’s, he regularly charted singles of his own, including four top ten hits. In 1990, he released a single for the Christmas season, “Christmas Carol”. He co-wrote the song with Don Sampson. Interestingly, rather than recording two tracks for a single, MCA chose to take Skip’s track and make it the B-side to Steve Wariner’s “On Christmas Morning”. While Steve’s track enjoyed some popularity, itself, it was “Christmas Carol” that caught more attention from country music listeners.

Told from the perspective of a store Santa, it’s about a little girl, born on Christmas Day, wanting a family of her own. Yes, it’s a sad story, but it’s not sappy, and in true Christmas fashion, it has a happy ending. Even Scrooge wouldn’t be able to keep a dry eye listening to this one.

Because 99.9% of today’s country music is so unlistenable, I generally don’t listen to country radio, anymore, so I don’t know if this record still gets much play at Christmas. If not, it’s a shame. Still a great record, 28 years after it’s release.
